The little bookshelf

One rainy morning this week, Nate & I brought home three new books from the library. Nate likes them all, but my favorite is “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile” by Bernard Waber.

The intense story of a crocodile who lives with his human family in a beautiful brownstone on East 88th Street and pines for acceptance from Loretta the cat next door, “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile” is the first children’s book I’ve come across that features the adults drinking wine with dinner.

Would this ever fly today? I doubt it. But it’s done here in a way that makes adult life seem so sophisticated and lovely. Who wouldn’t want to grow up, live on 88th Street, and take a crocodile ice skating at Wollman Rink?
